The Rural University is a community-based system for the development of human resources. A cycle of research, action, and learning permits scientific knowledge to be directly linked to the application of technology. Learning is then channeled back into the curriculum. The University's strategy includes strengthening community structures, applying science and technology to the rural economy, and formal training.
To develop human resources in rural areas, youth are trained as promoters and technicians in rural well-being. This training is realized through the Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial (SAT), a tutorial learning system accompanied by an innovative educational curriculum recognized by the Colombian Ministry of Education. Living and working in their communities, students join the system as they begin to study a number of disciplines with tutors trained by the Rural University. Disciplines include service to the community, mathematics, language, science, and technology.
Rural youth who finish high school, via SAT or traditional programs, can continue their studies in rural education at the university level. These students, who are being trained in an innovative program that integrates educational, productive, and organizational aspects of rural life, undertake joint research and development ventures with members of their communities. They also participate in the activities of the agro-industrial centre on the university campus, which provides training and support to small, local agro-industries, such as those involved in producing soy milk, fruit juice, and chocolate. The centre has developed courses in rural agro-industry for potential entrepreneurs and is intimately involved with the development, support, and dissemination of agro-industry in the region.
