Bina Nusantara University was originally founded as a short-term computer training institute, Modern Computer Course, October 21th, 1974. It has started a continual expansion, blessed with a solid foundation, clear vision, and high dedication.

Rapid growth and the people's interest led to the school's induction. Modern Computer Course had developed into a Computer System Academy (ATK) on July 1st, 1981. It offered courses in Information Management and Information Technology. Three years after, on July 13th, 1984 ATK acquired "Registered" status and changed its name to AMIK Jakarta. On July 1st, 1985, AMIK opened a course in Accounting Computerization. AMIK started using the name of Bina Nusantara on September 21st, 1985.

Ministry of Education and Culture awarded AMIK The Best Computer Academy through Higher Education Board District III on March 17th , 1986 when it was still relatively young. The growing need for computer literate personnel motivated AMIK Bina Nusantara to establish STMIK (Institute of Management and Computer Science) Bina Nusantara on July 1st, 1986. This Institute offered Information Management and Computer Science Study Program (S-1) while Computer System Program Study (S-1) was still in process.

On November 9th, 1987 AMIK Bina Nusantara was merged with STMIK Bina Nusantara. It created a single institute offering Diploma (D-3) and Strata 1 (S-1) programs. STMIK Bina Nusantara achieved "Accredited" status for all its programs and levels, on March 18th, 1992. Having already carved a good reputation, STMIK Bina Nusantara inaugurated its Master Program in Information System Management, the first of its kind in Indonesia on May 10th, 1993.

Bina Nusantara University (UBiNus) was established on August 8th, 1996 and then legalized by the Government. STMIK Bina Nusantara merged into Bina Nusantara University on December 20th, 1998. Bina Nusantara University has already had 5 faculties: Computer Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Letters, and Mathematics & Statistics, and Masters Program.

UBiNus has tried to contribute something worthy to its development. UBiNus has made another forward step by establishing a good relationship with Curtin University Australia. The cooperation, bound up on 1997, has continued its progress to hold a double degrees program for S-1 International.

UBiNus as a leading private university in information technology needs to provide the appropriate facilities for its students. Internet is simply the basic skill each students need to master to enter the invisible world. UBiNus has developed a main server to provide the need of Internet among BiNusians since 1997. INDOSAT was chosen as a cooperative partner in supplying this information need.

UBiNus has gone through many periods of changes. Its mission to produce qualified and applicable graduates has brought UBiNus to achieve ISO 9001 Certification in 1997. Its commitment to the quality has motivated UBiNus to apply a quality management as a system to hold the entire education programs. Hopefully, the progresses UBiNus has achieved so far will be recognized as an appreciation to the hard work. Some computer industrial companies, such as CISCO, Microsoft, Lotus Development Indonesia, Computer Associates, etc, have involved BiNus in a good cooperation in 1999. They help BiNus to create scientific and technologic environment.

UBiNus has a mission to prepare its graduates to get the job in the first year of the graduation. Some of them may have difficulties in finding the appropriate job that fits to their skill and willingness. UBiNus expresses its concern for the future of its graduates by forming BiNus Career, -the right answer for career- in 2002. BiNus Career helps graduates by linking them to companies, which are searching for the suitable candidates for particular positions.

The rapid growth of UBiNus has led to the establishment of a training center of continuous study, BiNus Center. BiNus Center has been developed from its previous form, Bina Nusantara Training and Recruitment Center (BNTRC) in 2001. During its latest development, BiNus Center has had many branches.

The Joseph Wibowo Center for Advanced Learning (JWC) is the newest campus of Bina Nusantara University. JWC is located in the strategic area and accessible from any sites. The programs provided by JWC are divided into:

Different from two other UBiNus campuses (Kampus Syahdan and Kampus Anggrek), which emphasize on the education based on information technology, JWC tends to offer the skill on management and business. JWC has applied some innovative breakthroughs since October 2001. Executive Development Program is a part of The Joseph Wibowo Center for Advanced Learning of Bina Nusantara University. The program has started its activities in 2000.

BiNus International, another qualified program launched in 2001, is designed to help graduates in establishing an optimal global career. This program is Single and Double Program in cooperation with well-known universities in Australia. S1 International offers these following Programs Accounting (in cooperation with Curtin University of Technology), Computer Science (in cooperation with RMIT), Information System, and Marketing. S1 International applies practical student-centered pattern during the process of learning and teaching. The international standard curriculum is designed under the supervision of academics and the experts in their field. The good relationship between UBiNus and well-known overseas universities opens a wide opportunity to introduce the students to multinational companies.

UBiNus will continue to keep its pride as a qualified university. One of its latest development, Sekolah Bina Nusantara, is a co-educational, multi-denominational day school centrally located in Simprug, Jakarta Selatan is and easily accessible from the major residential areas of the city and surrounds. Opened in July 2003, the new Pre-School to Senior High School campus of Bina Nusantara School offers students a modern and fully equipped educational institution.

The School is open to Indonesian and expatriate students with the dominant language of instruction being English. Typically, the subjects of PPKN, Religion and Bahasa Indonesia are taught in Bahasa Indonesia.
